Comparison of thyroglobulin levels on the third and fifth day after rhTSH injection in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer

Christina Kogia , Maria Drakou , Dimitrios Lilis , Dimitrios Ioannidis , Antonis Polymeris

Objective: Thyroglobulin (Tg) production by normal or malignant thyroidal cells is TSH dependent. The rhTSH administration for Tg stimulation in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC), after thyroidectomy and eradication of thyroid remnants with I-131, offers an alternative to thyroid hormone withdrawal preventing the progressive morbidity of hypothyroidism. Tg measurement is usually obtained on the 3rd and 5th day after the first rhTSH injection.<p class="abste...

Differential effect of vitamin D therapy on insulin resistance in vitamin D deficient women

Psachna Stavroula , Vogiatzi Evangelia , Kogia Christina , Ioannidis Dimitrios , Lilis Dimitrios , Drakou Maria , Polymeris Antonis , Papapetrou Peter

Forty-one vitamin D deficient women (aged 26-75 years, mean 56.2, median 57) were treated with Vitamin D3 (50000 IU/week for 1.5 month and 25000 IU/week for another 1.5 month). Before treatment their serum 25(OH)D was 17.3±6.1 ng/ml (mean±SD) and after treatment 37.0±7.5 (P<0.0001). Their HOMA-IR was 2.2±1.1 before and 2.3±1.1 after (P=NS), serum insulin 9.0±4.2 mIU/l before and 9.6±4.5 after (NS), glucose 96.2±8.2 mg/dl before and...

Differential diagnosis between classic primary-, normocalcemic- and secondary hyperparathyroidism based on PFI and WI

Polymeris Antonis , Psachna Stavroula , Ioannidis Dimitrios , Lilis Dimitrios , Drakou Maria , Papapetrou Peter

Introduction: Patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) present high calcium and PTH levels while some patients present also high PTH levels but normal calcium levels (NHPT) and such patients be considered as having normocalcemic hyperparathyroidism. On the other hand vitamin D deficient patients develop secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT). Sometimes normocalcemic- and secondary hyperparathyroidism coexist. Therefore in clinical settings it is very difficult to disting...

PFI and WI before and after loading with vitamin D in vitamin D deficient patients

Polymeris Antonis , Psachna Stavroula , Ioannidis Dimitrios , Lilis Dimitrios , Drakou Maria , Papapetrou Peter

Aim: To evaluate the change in PFI (Parathyroid Function Index) and WI (Wisconsin Index) after loading with vitamin D in patients with vitamin D deficiency.Patients and Methods: In 41 vitamin D deficient patients (25(OH)2D<17.16±6.07 ng/ml, mean±SD) the PFI (PTHxCa devided by P) and the WI (PTHxCa) were evaluated before and after 3 month loading with Vitamin D 50.000 IU per week for the first 6 weeks and 25.000 IU per week for the ne...

BackgroundFollowing the 4th edition of WHO classification of thyroid tumors several pathologic entities were reclassified, mainly as a means of de-escalating addressed therapy. We herein present two rare types of thyroid cancer, hyalinizing trabecular tumor (HTT) and Warthin-like papillary carcinoma (WL-PTC).Cases presentationA 64-year-old female patient presented with an ultrasonographic 1.92 × 1.11 cm ...

Isolated FSH deficiency. A rare cause of male infertility

Vogiatzi Evangelia , Psachna Stavroula , Ioannidis Dimitrios , Lilis Dimitrios , Drakou Maria , marathonitis Anastasios G. , Marathonitis George , Koika Vasiliki , Georgopoulos Neoklis , Polymeris Antonis

Background: Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), a dimeric glycoprotein hormone, stimulates Sertoli cell proliferation and spermatogenesis in males. Azoospermia is defined as the absence of sperm in the ejaculate. The majority of patients with non-obstructive azoospermia have high FSH levels. Isolated FSH deficiency has been reported in a few patients.Case Presentation: A 22-yr-old, 172-cm-tall male presented with azoospermia. He was born at full term wit...

Atypical hürthle cell adenoma: be aware

Polymeris Antonis , Kogia Christina , Drakou Maria , Lilis Dimitrios , Ioannidis Dimitrios

Introduction: Among all thyroid nodules 3 to 10% are Hürthle cell (HC) neoplasms classified as either HC adenomas or carcinomas. The presence of capsular or vascular invasion is indicative of a HC carcinoma whose incidence has been found to be 5 to 35%. Hürthle cell carcinoma could also lead to distant metastases and its decreased ability to uptake radioiodine worsens the prognosis. There are reports of histologically characterized HC adenomas with unpredictable clin...

Hereditary pancreatitis as a rare cause of diabetes mellitus in the youth

Polymeris Antonis , Drakou Maria , Kogia Christina , Lilis Dimitrios , Ioannidis Dimitrios

Introduction: Most cases of Diabetes mellitus (DM) in children and adolescents are autoimmune (type 1), even though recently there has been an increase in type 2 DM mainly due to the increased prevalence of obesity in this age group. However, rarely DM could be attributed to other causes such as MODY. An extremely rare cause is the hereditary pancreatitis due to activating mutations of the PRSS1 gene. This gene encodes an enzyme, cationic trypsinogen, whose hyperactivity leads...

Introduction: Several studies have demonstrated associations of birth weight with metabolic and reproductive abnormalities in adults. The aim of this study was to investigate the birth weight in women with PCOS and its correlation with important clinical and biochemical parameters of the syndrome.Patients and methods: We studied 288 women with PCOS according to the NIH criteria (1990) and 166 women with normal cycles and without clinical or biochemical h...
